Resilient guest has dreams to open up her own nonprofit

Meet Corey, a resilient guest of Gabriel House, with a dream to one day, open up her own nonprofit facility.

Corey is a former guest who stayed with us in 2017. She returned a few months ago for additional medical care for a rare bone cancer which was first diagnosed when she was 18.

While staying at Gabriel House, Corey and her caregiver would make the 30-minute drive downtown to UF health, daily, for her proton therapy.

None of this has stopped her from reaching her life goals. A Tallahassee native, she graduated from Florida State University with a Master’s degree in Criminology and Social Work all while still going to regular doctors’ appointments.

Being a nonprofit, we were so interested to hear Corey’s story and her desire to start a non-profit. She was really grateful and appreciative of the mission of Gabriel House and seeing the impact we had on others made her realize that non-profits were truly effective in helping people.

Now 30 years old, Corey is continuing her education and is enrolled in the University of Central Florida’s nonprofit certification management program and has already finished one semester.

Her interest is in preventative counseling with ex-felons and inmates, and reintegrating them back into society. Corey believes everyone deserves a second chance and thinks they are a population of our society who are largely overlooked.

In a similar fashion, we want our guests and caregivers to benefit from our community of healing at Gabriel House to provide them with a better sense of hope and well-being as they transition back home.

Meet Corey and learn more about her medical journey here!
